Bimetallic switches
MachineDesign.com%3A Switch Tips%3A Bimetallic switchesBimetallic switches are electromechanical thermal sensors used in equipment ranging from hair dryers and coffee makers to industrial motors and auto engines. Their operating principle is simple: The bimetallic element consists of two different metals bonded together (frequently brass and Invar). The metals expand at different rates as they warm, causing the element to twist or curve. The changing geometry is used to make or break an electrical contact. Thus bimetallic switches serve as inexpensive overtemperature sensors and thermal cutouts. Once temperature has returned to normal levels, they revert back to their original geometry.
